Fixed Parameter Complexity and Approximability of Norm Maximization

چکیده
The problem of maximizing the p-th power of a p-norm over a halfspace-presented polytope in Rd is a convex maximization problem which plays a fundamental role in computational convexity. It has been shown in [19] that this problem is NP-hard for all values p ∈ N, if the dimension d of the ambient space is part of the input. In this paper, we use the theory of parametrized complexity to analyze how heavily the hardness of norm maximization relies on the parameter d. More precisely, we show that for p = 1 the problem is fixed parameter tractable but that for all p ∈ N \ {1} norm maximization is W[1]-hard. Concerning approximation algorithms for norm maximization, we show that for fixed accuracy, there is a straightforward approximation algorithm for norm maximization in FPT running time, but there is no FPT approximation algorithm, the running time of which depends polynomially on the accuracy. As with the NP-hardness of norm maximization, the W[1]-hardness immediately carries over to various radius computation tasks in Computational Convexity.

Fixed parameter approximability and inapproximability
NP -hard problems are believed to be intractable. This is the widely believe assumption that P 6= NP . In parameterized complexity the input is refined to (I, k) with k a parameter depending on the input and the goal is to find an exact algorithm that runs in time f(k) ·nO(1) for the problem so that f is an arbitrary function. In this draft we only focus on k that is the size of the optimum sol...
متن کاملParameterized Complexity of Generalized Vertex Cover Problems
Important generalizations of the Vertex Cover problem (Connected Vertex Cover,Capacitated Vertex Cover, andMaximum Partial Vertex Cover) have been intensively studied in terms of approximability. However, their parameterized complexity has so far been completely open. We close this gap here by showing that, with the size of the desired vertex cover as parameter, Connected Vertex Cover and Capac...
متن کاملOn the max min vertex cover Problem
We address the max min vertex cover problem, which is the maximization version of the well studied min independent dominating set problem, known to be NP-hard and highly inapproximable in polynomial time. We present tight approximation results for this problem on general graphs, namely a polynomial approximation algorithm which guarantees an n approximation ratio, while showing that unless P = ...
متن کاملBeyond Worst-Case (In)approximability of Nonsubmodular Influence Maximization
We consider the problem of maximizing the spread of influence in a social network by choosing a fixed number of initial seeds, formally referred to as the influence maximization problem. It admits a (1 − 1/e)-factor approximation algorithm if the influence function is submodular. Otherwise, in the worst case, the problem is NP-hard to approximate to within a factor of N1−ε. This paper studies w...
